Exploring sculpture and sculpting materials26 February 2026 (by admin) |
Voyagers and Discoverers have thrown themselves into our new art block of sculpture by learning about Barabara Hepworth and exploring clay.
By discussing and sketching Barabara Hepworth’s sculptures, the children began to understand that art doesn’t always have to look “real”. Instead, it can express feelings, movement, and ideas through abstract forms. These ideas will help inspire their own sculptures.
After studying Hepworth’s sculptures, the children began experimenting with clay. They practised; coiling, pinching and shaping, rolling, piercing, carving, mark making, smoothing and score and slip (joining). They also explored the sculpting material of mod-roc and realised how it was different. Throughout these processes, they learnt how to think like a sculptor (experimenting, adapting, taking risks and responding to what happens).
We are super proud of the resilience, creativity and focus the children showed. They are budding sculptors in the making!
